Guy is one of the young people who took a misstep in life, found himself in a juvenile detention center, and is now determined to start his life again with a career as a male barber. Guy is part of Right to Play Thailand’s ‘Youth Unlocking their Potential’ program and was supported with skills and equipment to open his own barbershop.

Guy first became a barber in the juvenile detention center school shop. “I’ve learned the techniques of haircuts from clients with a variety of hair and head shapes because each one is different”, Guy said. “Our teachers will let us do it ourselves and give advice. I’m both responsible and in charge of the shop by keeping it clean, as well as monitoring the store’s expenditures. All of this allowed me to learn a lot.”

Ms.Joy, or Khun Phaporn, a barber teacher at the Polytechnic School in Chonburi province, saw Guy’s abilities and determination and gave Guy the opportunity to work the way he dreamed of. Ms. Joy said in an interview that Guy was an honest, skilled boy, who learns quickly, stays interested in improving himself and is willing to receive feedback to improve his haircut skills. Ms. Joy: “From the first day I met him, I thought that Guy was a child like no other seeing his determination to study far from home, and to rely on temples as accommodation. I saw that he was dedicated and supportive, so I let him stay at the barbershop and I let him take care of the shop, including opening and closing it.”
“As a teacher, I think that identifying or getting an opportunity is very important to young people who took a misstep in life. Some people are unforgiving, but I believe we should give them another chance, because if someone reaches out to them, they’ll be less likely to reoffend.” said Ms. Joy. Getting hands on experience, for example as a barber, will bring experience and learning. Therefore, Right to Play’s activities focus on creating experiences for young people to experience and reflect on experiential-based learning and encouraging young people to continue learning. To sharpen their skills to accumulate into real productivity, Right To Play trusts and supports young people who are determined to transform themselves to start all over again and we are committed to empowering them to fulfil their potential.
