Guy first became a barber in the juvenile detention center school shop. “I’ve learned the techniques of haircuts from clients with a variety of hair and head shapes because each one is different”, Guy said. “Our teachers will let us do it ourselves and give advice. I’m both responsible and in charge of the shop by keeping it clean, as well as monitoring the store’s expenditures. All of this allowed me to learn a lot.”
Ms.Joy, or Khun Phaporn, a barber teacher at the Polytechnic School in Chonburi province, saw Guy’s abilities and determination and gave Guy the opportunity to work the way he dreamed of. Ms. Joy said in an interview that Guy was an honest, skilled boy, who learns quickly, stays interested in improving himself and is willing to receive feedback to improve his haircut skills. Ms. Joy: “From the first day I met him, I thought that Guy was a child like no other seeing his determination to study far from home, and to rely on temples as accommodation. I saw that he was dedicated and supportive, so I let him stay at the barbershop and I let him take care of the shop, including opening and closing it.”
